We design and install bespoke Orangeries

Despite their traditional design, orangeries lend themselves perfectly to older and modern homes alike. A well-lit space that epitomises luxury, orangery glazed extensions traditionally used to house a range of fruit trees. Whilst they can still be used for that today, thanks to their energy-efficient structure, they’re suitable for a multitude of purposes. Whether you're looking for somewhere to unwind after a long day, a luxurious space in which to dine, or something entirely different, a luxury orangery can be designed to suit any home in Greater Manchester & Cheshire.

    You can complete the look of your orangery with a choice of colours. However, we offer a number of brickwork options too. We can even match the brickwork to your current property, ensuring the orangery looks more like an extension of your current home than a separate part of it.

    Do you need planning permission for an orangery?

    An Orangery, conservatory, and an extension fall under the same rules and are considered permitted developments and do not require planning permission. However, there are limitations;

    • An orangery must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original property by more than 3 metres for an attached property and 4 metres for a detached one.
    • It should not cover more than half the area of your garden.
    • If building a conservatory on the side of your property, it should take up no more than half the width of the property.
    • Orangeries that are built forward of the principal elevation or at the side of the property must not be facing a road.
    • The height of the orangery cannot exceed 4 metres. However, if it is located within 2 metres of the property boundary, the height cannot exceed 3 metres. The height can also not be higher than the highest part of the property’s roof.

    What is the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?

    Orangeries and conservatories are two types of home extensions that provide additional living space and bring natural light into the home. They share similarities, but there are some key differences between the two.

    An orangery is typically a more substantial and solid structure than a conservatory. It usually has a partially solid roof and brick or stone pillars, which gives it a more integrated look with the home's architecture.

    A conservatory, on the other hand, has a fully glazed roof and walls, which gives it a more open and airy feel. Conservatories are typically used as a dedicated space for enjoying the outdoors while still being sheltered from the elements.

    Why do they call it an orangery?

    The name "orangery" comes from the original use of these structures in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Orangeries were built to protect citrus trees and other delicate plants from harsh winter weather. The word "orange" refers to the citrus fruit, which was a prized commodity in Europe during this time. Wealthy landowners and nobility would build orangeries as a way to display their wealth and sophistication, as only the wealthy could afford to cultivate exotic fruit like oranges.

    Stylish orangery extensions for a bright and cosy interior

    Internally, there is some ceiling space that speakers or lighting can be incorporated into, whilst additional customisation is possible with doors and windows of your choosing. This means you can create an elegant looking orangery extension which is unique to you. There's also a variety of colours and brickwork options from which to choose, increasing the scope for customisation for your bespoke orangery even further.
